The Road Safety Hackathon

Nicole Foundation has partnered with The Innovation Village through the Future Lab Studio to organize a Road Safety Hackathon.

The objective of the Hackathon is to identify market-ready scalable tech-enabled solutions to enhance safety on the road around the specific components of the Foundation’s 8 Wheels of Offerings, particularly:

Before you travel

Preparing for safe and convenient travel

When with family or relatives

Securely getting to the destination with loved ones

When you are a passenger

Actively and safely participating in the journey

When an accident happens

taking life-saving action when something goes wrong

The 2-day hackathon running April 8 – 9 will bring together diverse teams of Technical/ Developer, Business/ Generalist and Subject Matter Expert talent to envisage practical tech-enabled solutions to Road Safety. 

The winning solutions will be selected by a panel of esteemed Judges based on the criteria of: 

  • Alignment

    How strongly aligned the proposed innovation is to the Foundation’s 8 Wheels, more so, the 4 key themes of the Hackathon

  • Inventiveness

    The uniqueness of the proposed solution as measured by the novel use of technology and overall approach

  • Feasibility

    A demonstrated pathway to a Minimum Viable Product within 6 months or less

  • Scalability

    Demonstrating a reasonable pathway to scaling the solution across initial and follow-on markets

  • Pitch

    The quality and comprehensiveness of the pitch

Format

The Hackathon will bring together multidisciplinary builders to envisage and develop tech-enabled Road Safety interventions.   

Builders will work in teams of up to 5, working across the 2 days to make as much progress on their proposed solutions as possible. The Hackathon will be supplemented by Fireside Chats, Coaching Sessions, and opportunities to engage Subject Matter Experts. Teams will also attend workshops on a range of enabling topics such as Design Thinking, Business Model Innovation and Product Development, among others, aimed at equipping the teams with the skills and insights to develop market-relevant solutions. The Hackathon will culminate in a Pitch Session where the Judges will select the winning concepts. 

The winning teams will join the next Cohort of Future Lab Studio’s flagship Incubation program, helping further refine the concept in preparation for the opportunity to pitch to Angel and Venture Capital investors to secure funding for scale.  

A detailed schedule of activities will be shared with the selected builders.

  • Enrolment into the next cohort of Future Lab Studio’s flagship Incubation program
  • Profiling and 3 months of Editorial Support across relevant TIV platforms
  • Opportunity to pitch to Angel and VC investors on completion of the Incubation program
1st Runner Up
  • 3 Months Free Space at TIV to build the concept
  • Enrolment into the next cohort of the Future Lab Studio’s Innovation Program
  • 10 hours of Mentoring and Subject Matter Expert support towards building the idea
  • 1 month of Editorial Support across relevant TIV platforms
2nd Runner Up
  • 1-month Free Space at TIV to build the concept
  • 5 hours of Mentoring and Subject Matter Expert support towards building the idea

Call for Application
Launch the campaign and request young people who are tech euthenist to apply and participate in the Road Safety hackathon Challenge.

Hackathon Days
Host builders to a two-day hackathon challenge in which they will be required to hack ideas on leveraging tech to improve road safety.

Spark
The winning team will subsequently complete the Future Lab Studio’s Continuous Innovation Framework primer, introducing them to the innovation techniques that can be leveraged to build a scalable concept.

Soar Program
The winning team will then join the next Cohort of the Future Lab Studio’s flagship Soar program, completing a 13-week journey of building a scalable business concept, ready for presenting to Angel and Venture Capital investors at the end of the program. The team will then have the opportunity to gain investment to scale.

The road safety hackathon is an innovative challenge organized by Nicole Foundation in partnership with The Innovation Village. The hackathon is intended to promote road safety through innovation and use of technology to deliver practical solutions through developing tech-enabled solutions to resolve challenges affecting the road and transport sector in Uganda.  

Road traffic crashes is the eight-leading cause of death in the world. This makes it a major public health concern and a growing socio-economic burden globally. It is because of these reasons that we decided to partner with Nicole Foundation to conduct a thematic Hackathon as the anchor event, aimed at initiating innovation on the Eight (8) parts of the Nicole Foundation Wheel of Offering with primary focus on how to ensure safety on the road, with preferred emphasis on:
